Another 7.8 earthquake hits Turkey. Cities destroyed, over 1200 dead, thousands injured

Another powerful earthquake tore through Turkey at 13:24:50 (local time). According to initial information, the magnitude is 7.7-7.8 on the Richter scale. The earthquake occurred in the same area as this morning’s earthquake of 7.8 on the Richter scale.

An EARTHQUAKE of magnitude 7.8 hit southern Turkey early this morning and was felt in a large part of the country as well as in several countries in the region, including neighboring Syria, initial data show. The official death toll, according to the latest information, across Turkey and Syria now stands at more than 1,290, with thousands injured. A major rescue operation is underway.

According to the USGS, the catastrophic earthquake of magnitude 7.8 occurred at 04:17 local time at a depth of approximately 17.9 kilometers. It is feared that the number of casualties could be much higher as the earthquake caught most people sleeping.
