Champlain Towers South rises 12 stories and it is completed back in 1981. Champlain Towers South is one of three towers comprising the Champlain Towers oceanfront condominium development in Surfside. It used to have 136 condo residences comprised of one-, two-, three-, and four-bedroom floor plans ranging in size from 1,200 to 4,500 square feet with deep balconies, and floor-to-ceiling glass windows.
A massive search and rescue effort was underway Thursday outside Miami after Champlain Towers South condo building was cut in half after “less likely than a lightning strike” scenario played out. Once a peaceful address, now 55 units collapsed into a mammoth pile of rubble leaving at least 3 persons dead.
Champlain Towers North seems to be similar age and style as Champlain Towers South, as it is located just up the street. “If it was structural failure. It may warrant evacuation of the North Tower“- said this Twitter user posting an image showing both towers in the same street.
The cause of the collapse is still unknown, but multiple sources reference ongoing roof work and a witness cited by The New York Times points to the presence of heavy equipment on the south tower over the last couple of weeks.

Even though this is more than 40 years old building, some of the condos were listed on Zillow for as much as $699,000. And these are 2 bed condos. This one was listed for $600,000 and it seems it was located in the part of the building that collapsed.
This condo is described as “Surfside’s best kept secret at Champlain Towers South! Designer owned Oceanfront NW corner condo, full of light & great attention to detail.” It is also noted that they will “connect you with a local agent who can give you a personalized tour of the home in-person or via video chat.”
Another condo listed on Zillow is this 1.748 sqft unit located at “Luxury building on the ocean” and it was listed at $699,000. Unfortunately, it is also stated that this condo is “currently rented to a very good tenant.” We hope he made it through this disaster.
Vivian Gonzales of WSVN News said that “weather is starting to become a issue as rain starts to move in over the site this morning. Heavier rain and lightning offshore may reach the area and possibly impact search and rescue efforts.”
